I believe that discouragement is the most common strategy that Satan uses to reduce the effectiveness of Christians today. Here is the deal....as a follower of Jesus you have to remember, many other followers of Jesus have been discouraged before us.
I was reading Elijah's story in 1 Kings 18 today, he asked God for miracle and God answered Him. He prayed, fire fell, people were awe struck. He triumphed over false prophets and was a hero of Israel. What did he do next? Read 1 Kings 19:3-5. Discouragement sets in. Yes...it happened to people in the Bible as well.
Learning to handle discouragement is part of normal spiritual growth. We shouldn't expect some sort of supernatural deliverance to wipe out all our negative feelings. God has given us His Word, the Bible; we should be feeding on it and the promises of God. He has given us His Son, Jesus, and put within us the Holy Spirit. It's as we learn to draw upon what we already have in Christ,by His Holy Spirit, that we will be able to come through discouragement.
Check out God's strategy for discouragement in the Old Testament story of Elijah. First, he makes sure that Elijah has had a good sleep. A lot of discouragement can be boiled down to being physically tired. Then an angel brings him food, not one time, but two times, so that he is refreshed and strengthened for what is to come. After all this, then Elijah is ready to continue on in the work of God.
Just trying to get a handle on it is all.........
